The Sheffield Scenester

Debut single from - Lords Of Flatbush (Released 26th July)

999 stencil full

Back in the early 80’s a movement arose under the guise of the Two Tone label, whose sole purpose was to bring commercial ska music to the masses. Taking this torch and running with it full pelt, Lords Of Flatbush have modernised that scuzzy edged raw energy to the point of polishing it into a well crafted, catchy and irresistible bouncer of a tune. This is what the song ‘999’ dispenses and however you want to take it, you can’t resist it. The Specials were, for my money, one of the best purveyors of this style of delivery. Disguised as a bouncy pop tune they would pontificate on various topical subjects of the day, and Lords Of Flatbush have achieved the same effect.

This verbalizing song about whatever life has to throw at you, be it good, be it bad, The Lords Of Flatbush will always be there to pick you up in your hour of need. Hence with the title ‘999’, they simply mean in case of emergency dance here!

As well as this original mix there is a Toddla T & Ross Orton Tropical Gangsta Mix which takes the original and treats it to a Paddy Orange stylized poetic/hip hop rant between the originals chorus. The beat is upgraded giving it more of a funked up electronic sound and whilst I prefer the original mix for its simplistic, almost good natured rustic approach, this one definitely brings a higher energy level to the whole proceedings.

So whether you just want to chill out to a good tune or get up and dance to a pumping variation of the same track then you definitely have that choice here! And to find out for yourself they will be appearing at the Weston Park Charity Event on August 30th, should be a good day, with a whole host of bands attending.
