Dead Sons Speak To The Sheffield Scenester

whirlow7

After playing to a totally jam packed crowd at DQ during Tramlines this year...and it being only their first gig, the Dead Sons are now setting their eyes on the Montgomery Theatre on the 24th September....this is going to be an amazing finish to their initial UK tour (which is in full swing as we speak!). We managed to catch up with the band for a quick chat....

SS: So you've only been around for a matter of months, your first gig was at DQ during Tramlines to a packed out crowd.....what were your first thoughts when you saw the crowd waiting to hear your music? Were you nervous?

DS: We were just ready to play. We'd spent a good couple of month’s locked away writing, so we were just ready to play. It felt natural. Super natural.

SS: Who are the Dead Sons?

DS: THOMAS ROWLEY (vocals, organ, piano, guitars). RYAN SELLARS (bass, xylophone). MATTHEW BYRNE (percussion, marimbas, harmonica, vocals, guitars). AARON FINUCANE (guitars, organ, piano, vocals). JOSEPH GREEN (drums, percussion).

SS: Obviously you've been around the scene before.....tell us about how you got together as The Dead Sons...

DS: Well first off we made the conscious decision not to be part of any scene. We're not making music to be part of some hipster faker set that wanna be in hello magazine or nme or whatever. All we're interested in is writing the best songs we possibly can and letting people hear them. You can get all our music for free online so there you go.

SS: What previous projects have you been involved with....come on name drop!!! ;-)

DS: Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, the Velvet Underground.............haha

SS: Your doing a gig at the Montgomery Theatre on the 24th September, that’s an unusual venue...how did that come about?

DS: Well the show at Montgomery theatre is about actually putting on a show ourselves in a place that's interesting and with another band we like.. As punters we're pretty bored of the same old venues. We wanna put on an event, something that's different and forward thinking. I don't know if we'll ever play a circuit venue in Sheffield. Who knows.

SS: What influences your song writing?

DS: As far as song writing goes we're pretty open minded in the sense of how we go about it. The most important thing to us all is to do the right thing by the song.

SS: What’s your opinion on the local music scene?

DS: It's not really for us to comment on others people’s music, it’s out there to listen to if people want to. That's the point, it's subjective. People can make up their own minds. As far as Sheffield goes, there are some very talented musicians making some very good music.

SS: If you could gig with anyone, who would you play with?

DS: We all have different ideas about that. It ranges from bands like the velvet underground, to grindreman, to old blues legends like Son House and Robert Johnson.
SS: What does the future hold for the Dead Sons?

DS: We're going to be working really hard in the rehearsal rooms and the studio. We wana get out on a proper tour in spring. Europe is where we really wanna get out and play.......

So thanks to the lads for giving up their precious time and with that we are now looking forward to the gig!
