The Sheffield Scenester

About us.......

Gail & Geoff Buckthorpe founded The Sheffield Scenester in November 2009 originally as a hobby....and they had no idea how successful the website would become!

Gail has had an interest in the local music scene since the 80’s, but it’s only in the last 7 years or so she really decided to do something about it. Originally Gail began writing blogs on MySpace about the gigs she’d been to and the small number of people who read them suggested that she reviewed for a local magazine, because the reviews were good to read....after making enquiries, Gail then started reviewing for Sheffield Music Scene, Sandman and Counterfeit magazines.

Geoff had an interest in photography and occasionally supplied photos to add alongside the reviews. He also tried his hand at reviewing and found his misspent youth very useful when covering the gigs!

Eventually Gail and Geoff decided to set their own music reviewing website up... with a small team of like-minded people. The Sheffield Scenester went from strength to strength, constantly covering local unsigned bands.

However because the website originally was a hobby, all expenses came from the Buckthorpe’s personal pockets...and unfortunately in January 2012 due various issues (but mainly due to the lack of funds), The Sheffield Scenester disappeared from the internet and nearly became a thing of the past. The disappearance triggered an over whelming amount of support from their friends/readers/bands and after receiving a large number of emails and messages for its imminent return, The Sheffield Scenester came back with sponsors and a new confidence to continue where they left off.

The Sheffield Scenester will always try to cover as many gigs as they can, however please remember we have a large amount of reviewing requests, and we just can’t physically do them all. The Sheffield Scenester is still a non-profit independent magazine, and the writers and photographers cover gigs on a voluntary basis.

It is also worth remembering that the opinions in the reviews, is solely that of the writer and not the opinion of the whole Sheffield Scenester Team. However, we are dedicated to writing what we feel is the truth, seeking the positives, and we will give only constructive criticism.
